Drinks and alcohol

Water is a good choice for keeping your family hydrated, but tea, coffee and milk count too!

Each of us should drink 6-8 glasses of fluid each day. It’s better if this is mainly water, but tea and coffee also count

  • Pasteurised whole or semi-skimmed milk or water, should be the main drink of children aged 1 to 5 years. From age 5, pasteurised skimmed or 1% fat milk can be given as a main drink
  • Swap sugary fizzy drinks for sparkling water with a slice of fruit added to it
  • If you drink dairy free alternatives such as soy milk, picking a fortified and lower fat/sugar option is a healthier choice
  • If you add sugar or syrup to hot drinks, think about cutting down how much you add, or how often
  • Swap sugary alcoholic drinks (such as alcopops or flavoured ciders) and mixers, for lower-sugar alternatives
  • Swap alcoholic drinks for low or alcohol free drinks

Keep a jug of water in the fridge, adding fruit or cucumber slices can give it more taste.
